Our largest fleet ever, 11 Cape Dory boats and 23 owners converged on the Encinal Yacht Club the weekend of August 10-11, 1996 to meet, chat and compare notes and boats. And there were plenty of boats to compare, from three CD 36’s to a 22’ Typhoon Senior. We had two 30’ motorsailers and a 30’ CD flybridge powerboat.
Boats kept coming in over the course of the afternoon, and with the help of Encinal’s dockmaster, our fleet was eventually rafted at the guest dock in three neat rows, probably the greatest concentration of Cape Dorys per square foot ever seen on San Francisco Bay. We even extended CD hospitality to a couple coming in on an Islander 36, unaware that we had reserved the entire guest dock. They joined us for dinner, and who knows - they might just decide to move up.
Thanks to Vonnie Pedersen’s flawless fleet logistics, we enjoyed a wonderful
dinner at the club, followed by our traditionally disorganized annual business
meeting. Noel Peattie volunteered to chair our 4th Annual Rendezvous next
August at Berkeley Marina, and Jo Anne Kipp and Dick Honey will host an
interim float-in at Oyster Point next spring.
Sunday
morning, we trooped next door to the stately Oakland Yacht Club for a fine
breakfast. Then it was "some disassembly required" to untangle
the raftup over the course of the morning, as boats started leaving for
home. We all appreciate Vonnie’s wonderful work in organizing and hosting
this event, and the great hospitality from Encinal and Oakland Yacht Clubs.
